Marketplace of Ideas – Your Idea in the Plenum

“We need to give the youth more opportunities to have personal experiences during their educational time. Only when we let them find facts for themselves can knowledge become wisdom.”

Walter Gropius (1883–1969), Founder of the Bauhaus Weimar

The aim of the “Marketplace of Ideas” of µe-bauhaus erlangen-nürnberg is the (speedy) realization of newly emerged (research) ideas or the evaluation of the potential of such ideas.

Any member of our faculty – student, doctoral candidate, staff member, professor – can convene the “Marketplace of Ideas” at any time.

To evaluate a submitted idea, a “master council” of meaningful doctoral students and professors is dynamically assembled in each case, to whom the idea can be presented in plenary session and who – if approved – will assist in coordinating the research tasks. It is the responsibility of the person who has generated the idea and wishes to implement it to prepare the research and development plan in advance and then present it to the “Master Council”.

In case the idea is brought by a student, the Master Council coordinates, if necessary, the training and instruction in the required tools, techniques and process technologies. This is mainly supported by the doctoral students and students from the master’s programs.

The “Marketplace of Ideas” is thus also a pillar of practical workshop training, enabling the deepening and broadening of practical skills or the expansion of theoretical-technical knowledge of our students on the research and development project of their own choice.

“At µe-bauhaus erlangen-nürnberg, you have the freedom to put your own idea into practice and to sound out whether it can work and how it ranks against the state of the art. This freedom to try out an idea with the means of the institutes is unique!”

Jan F. Dick, M.Sc., a doctoral student in the Department of Electronic Devices (LEB) at our university, who convened the first “marketplace of ideas” to realize a power tunnel field-effect transistor (power TFET) as part of his master’s program
